OK, this is not really an event, but today’s Boston Globe has a very amusing article listing a number of offbeat museums that you can visit in New England: http://www.boston.com/travel/explorene/galleries/quirky_museums/
These include the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, ME (run by the same guy giving a talk at the Boston Museum of Science this month); the Museum of Bad Art in Dedham, MA (a personal favorite); and the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, MA, whose members have done demonstrations of historical arms and armor at Arisia and other local conventions.
The Hibernian Hall in Watertown, MA has a pair of paranormal-themed events coming up:
The Mass UFO Show, Friday October 17th at 7:00pm (6:00pm if you want to hear the 1938 War of the Worlds radio show). According to http://www.ufoshow.org/:
[T]his year’s theme focuses on the alleged UFOs and the Struggle for Government Openness, Men In Black, The Roswell UFO Incident, alien abduction and a radio broadcast that spooked The United States in 1938.
The Mass Monster Mash, Saturday October 18th at 6:00pm. According to http://www.massmonstermash.org/:
The topics of discussion will include Mothman, Weird Massachusetts, Haunted Baseball, Phantom Hitchhikers, the Loch Ness Monster 75th Anniversary, the Bridgewater Triangle and Bigfoot in England! It’s time for the third annual “Mass Monster Mash”, New England’s premiere paranormal conference!
Boston’s Museum of Science is hosting a lecture and book signing by Loren Coleman, author of The Field Guide to Bigfoot, Yeti, and Other Mystery Primates Worldwide and Cryptozoology A to Z. This visit to the weirder side of science takes place on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 7:00 pm. Information is provided at http://www.mos.org/events_activities/lectures&d=2848:
Could hair samples be used to verify the existence of Bigfoot? Are unexplained animal droppings evidence of a new species? Do footprints hold the key to unlocking the mystery of the yeti? World-renowned cryptozoologist Loren Coleman has spent decades researching the existence of fantastical creatures and interviewing witnesses who have sighted sea serpents, lake monsters, Sasquatch, thunderbirds, and other yet-to-be verified animals. Join us to explore the science behind these mythic beings. Book signing to follow.
The event is free, but seating is limited and only museum members may reserve tickets in advance.
This event is being held in conjunction with the museum’s new temporary exhibit, opening on October 26th, called “Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids”. Visit http://www.mos.org/exhibits_shows/coming_soon&d=2674 for information about the exhibit.
