The Players’ Ring Theatre in Portsmouth, NH is a staging a live version of “Invasion From Mars”, based on the 1938 radio play that had everyone convinced that a real Martian invasion was under way.
Seventy five years ago, on the evening of October 30, 1938, the United States was gripped in panic because of a play. The Columbia Broadcasting System, and The Mercury Theatre Players, presented a radio adaptation of a novel by Herbert George Wells. Within minutes of the beginning of that broadcast, as much as twenty-five percent of the population of this country believed that Earth was being invaded by Mars. Pockets of pandemonium broke out across America.
Utilizing first-hand accounts, using the original script by Howard W. Koch, and employing the same Foley techniques from the production we will reproduce that broadcast exactly as it happened, minute by minute – occasionally pausing to tell the stories of those people outside the walls of that studio who were so affected by the broadcast.
Oct 11 – Oct 27: Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm. Sundays Oct 13 and Sept 20 at 7pm. Sunday Oct 27 at 2pm.
