What’s Coming Up in May

This is my blog, so I’m going to give an extra special plug to the New England Steampunk Festival on May 1st, at which I will be giving a talk on “Steampunk Propmaking for Beginners” and otherwise wandering around with an airship strapped to my back. Please come support the Charles River Museum of Industry as it recovers from recent flooding.

May 1st is also Free Comic Book Day! Check with your nearest comic book shop to find out if they’ve got any big events planned. Here is a list of FCBD events in New England that have crossed my radar; this is absolutely not a complete list:

Can’t Stop the Serenity — Boston 2010

The New England Browncoats are back with the fifth year of “Can’t Stop the Serenity,” a charity fundraiser to benefit the women’s rights organization Equality Now. The event will be held at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA June 18th and 19th; the shows start at midnight. Here’s the plan for this year:

This year, we will have 2 different special nights of events. On Friday, June 18th we will be screening Joss Whedon’s award-winning Internet musical sensation Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog featuring a shadowcast performance by The Teseracte Players of Boston. On Saturday June 19th we will be screening Joss Whedon’s 2005 film Serenity. Both events will start at midnight.

In addition to raising money for Equality Now, we will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the Greater Boston Food Bank. In the past four years we have collected over 3,000 lbs. of food for the GBFB. Anyone that brings a donation will be eligible for raffle prizes, including actual props used in the film Serenity.

Admission for each night will be $15 in advance and $20 the day of the show. A special 2-night combo ticket will be available for $25 available in advance only. Tickets will be available starting in May at the Coolidge Corner Theatre Box Office or online at www.coolidge.org.
