Vericon 2009

Vericon, a convention sponsored by the Harvard-Radcliffe Science Fiction Association, will be held at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA January 23-25, 2009. According to http://www.vericon.org/:

Vericon is a science-fiction, fantasy, gaming, and anime convention featuring many events and distinguished guest speakers. It has been held annually at Harvard University since 2001. The ninth Vericon will take place on Friday-Sunday, January 23-25, 2009. The convention is sponsored by the Harvard-Radcliffe Science Fiction Association (HRSFA), an undergraduate student group.

Guests include authors Kim Stanley Robinson, Elizabeth Bear, Paul Di Filippo, and Allen Steele.

Intercollegiate Quidditch World Cup 2008

Calling all muggles! This year’s Intercollegiate Quidditch World Cup tournament will be held at Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT on October 25th and 26th. According to the Leaky Cauldron’s Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=8339265398&topic=5591:

On Saturday, October 25th Middlebury League teams will battle for the chance to compete in the Intercollegiate Championship, which will take place the following day on Sunday, October 26th. Eight teams from around the country, from the west coast, and the south, to the northeast, have already signed on to compete in the intercollegiate tournament, including Princeton, Amherst, LSU, Washington State, and Occidental college. The World Cup will also feature special performances, food and refreshments throughout the weekend. The event is free and open to the public, and people of all ages and magical ability are encouraged to attend.

Mass UFO Show and Mass Monster Mash

“Lord of the Rings” Marathon

The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, MA will be having a daylong movie marathon showing of all three Lord of the Rings films (The Fellowship Of The Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return Of The King) on Sunday, October 12th. Note that these will be the Extended Versions. There will be additional screenings of the individual movies on the 10th, 11th, and 13th, but the only day you can see all three of them is the 12th. Screening of Tekkon Kinkreet (Anime)

The MIT/Harvard Cool Japan Research Project is sponsoring a showing of the anime film Tekkon Kinkreet plus a discussion panel and Q&A opportunity. The event will be held Wednesday, October 1st, at Harvard University’s Tsai Auditorium from 6:00-9:30pm. Here is the detailed schedule:

On Wednesday October 1st at Harvard, we will screen and discuss in a panel format the animated film, Tekkon Kinkreet (2006, Dir. Arias) that offers a unique portrayal of urban development, capitalist corruption, and youth violence. It is based on a 1996 manga by Matsumoto Taiyo, written after Japan plunged into recession. Produced by Tokyo-based, cutting-edge Studio 4C and directed by an American living in Tokyo with a screenplay by an American as well, the film underscores the transnational character of contemporary anime production. In 2008, the film won a Japan Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Bruce Campbell Live Appearances

Cult icon Bruce Campbell (Xena: Warrior Princess, the Evil Dead series, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., Bubba Ho-Tep, and a long list of other favorites) will be making a series of live appearances to promote his new horror film, “My Name Is Bruce.” The man himself says:

Barring union strikes, hurricanes, flat tires or Diptheria, I will be personally appearing at each of these cities to introduce the film and do a spirited Q&A afterward. I look forward to seeing you all there!

“Pushing Daisies” Tour

The Pie Hole restaurant from “Pushing Daisies” has been brought to life and put on wheels for the show’s “Touch of Wonder” promotional tour. Sadly, the closest this tour will get to us is its final stop in New York City’s Times Square at 7am on September 29th. They will be giving out freebies and, of course, pie.
