What’s Coming Up in August

First of all, I have some news for you Facebook junkies: now you can have the posts from this blog show up on your Facebook news feed! Go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/New-England-Science-Fiction-and-Fantasy-Events/139619329383173 or search for “New England Science Fiction and Fantasy Events”. If you Like the page, new posts will show up in the news feed shortly after I post them. The posts will appear to be written by “RSS Graffiti”; that’s the application I’m using to catch the feed. Note that if I post more than one entry in an evening, which I often do, you may see one post and then a message saying “See 1 more post from RSS Graffiti” which you’ll need to click on to see everything.

Note that the official calendar will still reside on http://nescifievents.org/. I don’t intend to create Facebook events for anything, as I believe that should be up to the actual event organizers.

You can also continue to subscribe by email, RSS feed, and LiveJournal — that’s not changing.

Anyway, on to the list of what I currently have in the calendar for August:

Connecticut:
July 31-August 1: Midsummer Magick Faire
August 20–22: 5Pi-Con

Maine:
July 31-August 1: Paranormal/Psychic Faire

Massachusetts:
August 1: Author Appearance: Tom Sniegoski
August 16: Author Appearance: Larry Doyle

New Hampshire:
August 19: Author Appearance: Tom Sniegoski and Christopher Golden (Note that Nate Kenyon was originally listed for this event as well, but the bookstore website isn’t listing his name any more, so I’m not sure what’s going on there.)
August 25: Author Appearance: Kate Kaynak

Montreal, Quebec, Canada:
August 13–15: Otakuthon 2010

Otakuthon 2010

Otakuthon, an anime convention, will be held in Montreal, Quebec (within reach of northern New England) the weekend of August 13-15, 2010. Find out more at http://www.otakuthon.com/2010/home.

Otakuthon 2009

World Science Fiction Convention Offers “Taster” Memberships

Anticipation, the World Science Fiction Convention being held in Montreal August 6th-10th, has announced that a trial or “Taster” membership will be available. The short summary is that if you are curious about the convention but not sure it’s worth it, you can buy a single-day membership, and if you decide you don’t like the convention, return to the registration desk within 3 hours and you’ll get a refund of most of the ticket’s cost. For a complete description of how the offer works visit http://anticipationsf.ca/Press/PressRelease25.

Can’t Stop the Serenity: Ottawa

A while back I mentioned that one option for catching a “Can’t Stop the Serenity” event would be to head to Ottawa, Ontario, if that’s closer to you than Boston. The Ottawa Browncoats have at last set a date: Sunday, June 21st at 3:30pm. For details visit http://www.myspace.com/ottawabrowncoats.

Montreal Comic-Con(s)

Readers in the northern part of New England can cross over into Canada and visit the Montreal Comic-Con on Sunday, June 7th. If that doesn’t work out, there’s another event planned for the weekend of Saturday, September 19th and Sunday the 20th. For details see http://www.montrealcomicon.com/.

Can’t Stop the Serenity 2009

“Can’t Stop the Serenity” is an annual fundraising event in which the movie “Serenity” (the follow-up to the TV series “Firefly”) is shown on movie theater screens worldwide, with the proceeds going to support the women’s rights organization Equality Now.

UPDATE: New England’s showing will be held Friday, June 19th and Saturday, June 20th at midnight at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA. In addition to “Serenity,” we’ll also be screening “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.” Tickets will go on sale in May.

The New England Browncoats will once again attempt to provide entertainment while folks wait in line. They also have some great raffle prizes collected; the price of a raffle ticket is a canned good to be donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank. For more information, keep an eye on http://www.cstsboston.com/.

If you’re closer to New York than Boston, the Browncoats of New York City will be hosting their event on Sunday, June 28th from 3:00pm to 8:00pm; for details see http://www.browncoatsofnyc.org/csts2009/. On the other hand, if you’re up in the far northern reaches of New England, perhaps Ottawa, Ontario would work for you; they haven’t announced details yet, but they’re definitely having a showing, so keep an eye on http://www.myspace.com/ottawabrowncoats.

DragonCon

DragonCon “the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the US,” will be held September 4th-7th, 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia.

“Atlanta?!?” you may be saying. “That’s nowhere near New England! Why tell us about DragonCon?” Because it really is the biggest convention on the East Coast — 30,000+ people, four official hotels, lots of popular guests, and something going on somewhere at all hours. Quite a few New Englanders travel to it each year; you can connect with some of them at http://community.livejournal.com/dcon_newengland/.

Memberships for the weekend are $70 right now; the price will go up to $80 on February 13th. For more information visit http://www.dragoncon.org/.

Hugo Award Nominations

The Hugo Awards are awarded each year to recognize excellence in science fiction and fantasy. They are given out at the World Science Fiction Convention, which will be held in Montreal in 2009. (See http://nescifievents.org/?p=247 for the initial posting about “Anticipation,” the 2009 WorldCon.)

Nominations for this year’s Hugo Awards are now being accepted. In order to nominate something for one of the Hugo categories, you must be a member of the 2009 WorldCon, or have been a member of the 2008 WorldCon. You do not have to purchase a full membership in order to nominate or vote for the Hugos; you only need a “Supporting Membership,” which lets you vote but does not actually get you into the convention. A supporting membership may be upgraded to full membership if you decide to attend WorldCon after all.

The deadline to purchase your membership in time to participate in the nomination process is January 31st, 2009. You have until the end of February to actually submit your nominations.

For more information about the Hugo Awards, visit http://www.thehugoawards.org/. For more information about the 2009 WorldCon, visit http://www.anticipationsf.ca/.
