Read Comics in Public Day

Tomorrow, August 28th, has been declared to be “Read Comics in Public Day”. According to organizer and comics blogger Brian Heater:

The concept is fairly simple: we’re asking that everyone take an hour or two out of their day on August 28th (also the birthday of Jack “King” Kirby, incidentally) to read a comic book in a public setting—a park bench, a beach, a bus, the front steps of your local library (we do ask, however, that you be mindful of local loitering laws). Let strangers see you reading a piece of sequential art.

Take to the streets. Be proud. If someone asks what you’re reading, say, “a comic book” (the phrase “graphic novel is also acceptable, but let’s face it, it sort of defeats the whole purpose). Heck, lend them a book, if you’ve got an extra—what better way to make a new friend and convert a new reader?

Meetups have been organized in these New England locations:

Also check out http://readcomicsinpublic.com/ for information on contests and other events. Their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/readcomicsinpublic may be the best place to watch for last-minute information on more meetups. (All of these Facebook links can be viewed by people without Facebook accounts.)

Author Appearance: Joe Hill

Joe Hill, author of Horns, will appear at Casablanca Comics in Portland, ME on August 14 from 4:00-6:00pm to sign his new comic “Locke and Key.” Get details at http://www.casablancacomics.com/.

What’s Coming Up in August

First of all, I have some news for you Facebook junkies: now you can have the posts from this blog show up on your Facebook news feed! Go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/New-England-Science-Fiction-and-Fantasy-Events/139619329383173 or search for “New England Science Fiction and Fantasy Events”. If you Like the page, new posts will show up in the news feed shortly after I post them. The posts will appear to be written by “RSS Graffiti”; that’s the application I’m using to catch the feed. Note that if I post more than one entry in an evening, which I often do, you may see one post and then a message saying “See 1 more post from RSS Graffiti” which you’ll need to click on to see everything.

Note that the official calendar will still reside on http://nescifievents.org/. I don’t intend to create Facebook events for anything, as I believe that should be up to the actual event organizers.

You can also continue to subscribe by email, RSS feed, and LiveJournal — that’s not changing.

Anyway, on to the list of what I currently have in the calendar for August:
