Brass Ring Academy and Cabaret

The New England Carousel Museum in Bristol, CT is hosting the “Brass Ring Academy and Cabaret,” a steampunk festival to raise funds for the museum, on January 4th, 2014. There will be panel discussions, performances, and vendors:

On Jan. 4, 2014, some of the best-known authors, performers and presenters in the rapidly growing Steampunk genre will gather at the Carousel Museum for an all-ages day of classes, a High Tea and an evening of performances for ages 18 and up. The regular museum exhibits will also be open, plus a variety of vendors to delight and tempt you with their creations. In addition to offering education and fun, the day will raise funds help repair the Museum’s roof.

Steampunk is a new trend with old roots. What if modern technology had been invented in the Victorian age and was powered by steam? What if the works of Mary Shelley, H.G. Wells, and Jules Verne were fact instead of fiction? Like Steampunk itself, this event combines Victoriana, fantasy, brass gadgetry, and fun.

Presenters include author Mark P. Donnelly, recently featured in the Wall Street Journal for his teaching of bartitsu, the martial art mentioned in Sherlock Holmes stories. Also appearing will be author Thomas Willeford, creator of the brass and leather gadgetry seen in TV shows like Castle and Oddities, “The Victorian Lady” Kandie Carle, magician Daniel Greenwolf, and many others. Classes include everything from flower language, etiquette and dance to bartitsu, DIY gadgetry, and spiritualism. The High Tea at 4 p.m. will feature delicacies from around the Victorian world, teas and other beverages and period parlor games. The evening show features: White Elephant Burlesque Society; Daniel Greenwolf; Desert Moon Dancers; bands Frenchy and the Punk and Them Damn Hamiltons; and a special surprise group.

Period dress or costumes are not required but are highly encouraged.
