The Rhode Island Science Fiction Club (RISFC) will be having a Sci-Fi Film Festival at the Warwick Public Library in Warwick, RI on Saturday, September 11th from 9:00am-5:00pm. The film list currently includes Godzilla: Final Wars, Young Frankenstein, It Came From Outerspace (1953), and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. The annual Black Ships Festival in Newport, RI is a celebration Japanese art and culture. The entire event runs July 15-18; on July 15 at 9:00pm there will be an Anime Party held dockside at Waites Wharf.

Did you miss Boston’s “Can’t Stop the Serenity” event? Are you jonesing to see “Serenity” and “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” again? Well, you have another chance! The Rhode Island Science Fiction Club and the RKO Army are joining forces to bring CSTS to Rhode Island:
You have another chance to catch “Can’t Stop the Serenity”!!! July 24th at Cinemaworld in Lincoln, RI at 10:30 pm. We’re staring with Joss Whedon’s “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” with a live shadowcast by the RKO Army followed by “Serenity” at midnight! The Rhode Island Science Fiction Club is hosting this event to bring CSTS to Rhode Island and southern New England. $15 in advance and $20 at the door with all proceeds to go to Equality Now. Fantasy artist Frank Frazetta, known for his illustrations of Conan The Barbarian, Lord of the Rings and Tarzan, passed away on May 10, 2010. The Knight Memorial Library in Providence, RI will honor him with a free showing of the documentary film Frazetta: Painting with Fire on May 26th at 6:00pm. “The Big Read” is a program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts to promote reading, and among the current featured books are Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and The Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. (Ursula K. LeGuin’s A Wizard of Earthsea is also on the list, but it seems those events are already over and done with.) There will be events across the nation related to these and other books, focusing on one book each month; see http://www.neabigread.org/ for full details.

Every year, the first Saturday of May is Free Comic Book Day, when participating comic book stores will offer free comic books to all visitors. This year Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 1st, and some stores will be making a big party out of it. Check with your local comic book store to see what their plans are.
